    Thanks, I just started messing around with this tuning yesterday after watching a martin simpson lesson. I play blues and it really works for alternating bass style with a ton of great turnarounds and lots of chordal variations up the fretboard, Surprised there is not more on the web on this tuning, your video is one of very few about this tuning. I guess it all goes back to Martin. I will keep working on the fretboard possibilities by ear until the lucky day I can find a workshop with Martin? This reminds me a bit of Skip James who played in Dminor, DADF#AD much for much of his haunting blues songs, but just the 3 lower strings are same intervals.

    You don't need to present as something you aren't...it's fine to just noodle and enjoy what you come up with without pretending you understand what you are playing... You aren't even in tune man, why present as a professional? It's doing a disservice to the very people you claim this is aimed at. Just be honest and say you figured some things out by ear, you don't need all the posturing and music terms thrown in at random with no relation to what you are actually playing...

  • @jangarrack

    Thank you kindly dear Andy, this is great. Richard T has always been my hero - and I do play the guitar fairly well - but never got into the tuning variants. This is a very fundamental instruction you are giving - well done. Quite a bit eerie tuning, transforms the guitar, perfect for the song. RT must've been using the DADGAD as well.

    • @AndyHowell
      @AndyHowell 3 года назад

      For ages this tuning sounded wrong to me. I was alone one New Year with the flu and decided I was going to crack it! Once you have got used to it things are pretty straightforward. I think the biggest problem with these tunings is that people expect them to be more complex than standard. Thanks for the comments - I might do some more!

    Very nice, Andy - great playing on an excellent and unusual guitar. Andy Irvine certainly didn't write either the words or the tune of this Scottish ballad, which also exists as Thomas of Winesbury and as Thomas of Winesbury and the King's Daughter. However, he did set it (with Sweeney's men in the 60s) to the tune of another Child ballad - Fause Foodrage - and this is the tune it is now usually sung to. Actually, the two tunes are very similar. You can see the original as 'Thomas etc' in the Appendix to 'Ancient Scottish Ballads' by G Kinloch, published in 1827 and available as a free download online. Barbara Dickson has a version which is much closer to this tune (which has bigger melodic intervals than the John Renbourn/Andy Irvine/Anne Briggs, etc version). I think Frankie Armstrong also has bits of this tune in her version.

      @@AndyHowell He is indeed a great luthier, a friend of mine had one when I lived in the North. I probably would have spotted it but your tuner obscures his trademark head shape, I think. I just looked at my very old copy of 'The seeds of love' songbook (published by EFDSS yonks ago) and it also has the original tune. The chords are a bit naff, but it is the same tune as in the Kinloch, which is available here: catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/007700607. It's out of copyright, and is freely downloadable. Just for interest, really. It's harder to sing than FF, in my opinion.
